The 16th edition of the UEFA European Football Championship, the Euro 2020, started on June 11, 2021. The tournament lasted for a whole month, with the final taking place on July 11, 2021.

A total of 24 European nations booked their tickets for the group stages. The soccer tournament was due to happen in 2020, but it got postponed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, this year’s competition somehow contrasted with the previous ones as it was hosted in 11 different cities across 11 UEFA countries.

The UEFA took all necessary sanitary precautions to avoid another coronavirus outbreak. As a result, certain restrictions were applied to soccer venues.

The 11 Stadiums Of The Euro 2020

A total of 11 soccer stadiums across 11 countries were selected to host the soccer matches. Each stadium had strict sanitary protocols to follow. Some grounds were only allowed a capacity of 20%, while others were at 25%, 50%, etc. Puskás Aréna was the only permitted stadium at full capacity. Such measures got implemented to prevent further contamination.

The number of soccer fans allowed in each stadium increased as the soccer tournament advanced. For example, the Wembley Stadium allowed around 23,000 fans during the group stage matches. In the second match of the round of 16, this number increased to 45,000 fans and eventually to 60,000 supporters in the semi-finals and the final.

Group F, known as the group of death, had Portugal, the Champions of the previous edition of the UEFA Euro 2016, together with France, 2018 World Champions. The teams had to wait until matchday 3 to know who will qualify for the Round of 16. France eventually finished first in Group F with 5 points. Germany and Portugal managed to book a place in the next round by finishing second and third. Hungary finished fourth with two points. Luke Shaw scored an early goal in the 2nd minute to give England the lead. However, Leonardo Bonucci equalized for Italy in the 67th minute to take the game into extra time. With no team able to capitalize on the extra time, the match’s outcome was to be decided in the penalty shootout.

Guided by Roberto Mancini, the Gli Azzurri eventually won the penalty shootout session by 3-2 to claim their second UEFA European Championship trophy.

Euro 2020 Top Scorers

During the 16th Edition of the Euro 2020, a total of 51 matches were played. Out of the 51 games, a total of 142 goals were scored. Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Patrik Schick of the Czech Republic scored the same number of goals, that is, 5 goals each. Since they both finished the tournament as the Euro 2020 top scorers, the number of assists and minutes played were used to determine one winner.

Ronaldo had one assist during the tournament while Schick had none. So, the Portuguese striker got selected as the top scorer of the Euro 2020 tournament.

Patrik Schick won the Euro 2020 goal of the tournament award thanks to a beautiful goal against Scotland in the group stage matches.

UEFA Euro 2020 Overview

The 16th Edition of the UEFA Euro 2020 was one full of emotions. Cristian Eriksen of Denmark had to be rushed to the hospital following a heart problem during the match against Finland. The player collapsed on the ground and these scenes really touched the whole soccer universe. Fortunately, Eriksen received the necessary treatment on time and was saved.

The Gli Azzurri on the other hand produced some of the best performances on the pitch to claim a second European Championship trophy. The players and managers were welcomed like heroes in their country where the Euro 2020 winner paraded the trophy.
